Human Design is a system for self-exploration that brings together astrology, the I Ching, Kabbalah and the chakra system.
Using your birth date, time and place, it creates a chart called a BodyGraph. Within the system, that chart is interpreted as a map of how you use energy, interact with other people and make decisions.
At first glance, it looks like someone has drawn a very complicated diagram of you. Shapes. Colours. Numbers. Quite a lot going on.
Let’s start with the useful bits.
Your type
The starting point for exploring how you use your energy. Human Design describes five types: Manifestor, Generator, Manifesting Generator, Projector and Reflector. Each has a different approach to doing things, engaging with opportunities and knowing when enough is enough.
Your strategy
The approach your type is encouraged to experiment with. It asks you to notice how opportunities arrive, what you respond to and what happens when you try to force something along.
Your authority
The system’s term for your decision-making process. Depending on your chart, that might mean paying attention to a gut response, giving your emotions time to settle or hearing yourself talk something through.
Your profile
Two numbers that describe themes in how you learn and relate to others. Think experimenting, observing, connecting or needing to disappear for a little while. Some of us need to learn the hard way. Apparently, there’s a profile for that.

A birth chart is a calculated map of the sky at the exact moment you were born.
It's based on real astronomical positions — where the Sun, Moon, and planets were from your exact location on Earth, down to the minute.
Astrology then translates that sky into a symbolic system. A circular chart divided into signs and houses, with meaning layered onto each placement. It's symbolic and psychological. It maps the sky at the moment you were born to identity patterns, emotional tendencies, relational dynamics, and the recurring themes that shape how your life feels over time. It's less about structure, more about narrative.
If human design is the Frank Lloyd Wright, astrology is the Billy Cotton. Together, they describe two different angles of one thing.
